Warrington Winter Night Shelter Project | ||||||||||||
A community project undertaken in the Winter of 1995. The culmination was an exhibition held in Warrington. | (10) | David is a rarity at the night shelter. Outside is his 5 series BMW in electric blue. By day he is a successful dentist in Widnes. He is also a christian (with a small 'c') and see's helping out in the shelter, preparing food, looking at rotted teeth, a way to put something back. (11)  | Several Women pass through the night shelter. Often they stay a few days or weeks before moving on. Georgina travels with her boyfriend. She has a refined 'home counties' accent, which can neatly hide her history of drug related problems. | |||||||||||
Volunteers have been cooking and preparing food since 8.30pm ready for the arrivals at 10pm. Boxes of surplus EC stewed steak, donated potatoes and breakfast cereals come in very handy. Many homeless who appear at nightshelter eat sweet things all day. Cakes and biscuits are cheap and are often what you crave if you have a speed or herion addiction. The meal here is a square meal with protein & vitamins as well as carbohydrate. It is often the only balanced one in the day for these people. | (12)  | |||||||||||
(13) | Tea & coffee are also laid on. As they start to relax the chatter starts. I am asked to explain why I am taking pictures in the room. Whether I can spare a pound. Whether I might want to swap my tour T-Shirt for a plain one from someone elses back.
Several people here are on the run from court, wives and husbands and don't want their images recorded. That's ok with me, if they believe or not that I will respect their wishes. | |||||||||||
