Warrington Winter Night Shelter Project
A community project undertaken in the Winter of 1995. The culmination was an exhibition held in Warrington. | (5) | Billy & Susie have a regular pitch outside the Palace Theatre on Oxford Road in Manchester. Trendy students going to the Cornerhouse Cinema and 'middle class' folk coming out from 'Cats' drop them some loose change. In the evening they retire to the 3rd level of a multi-story car park. "Me & Susie - We look after each other"
(6) ![]() | "This is my lad, Ryan" "I always keep a picture of him to give me a reason to go on. How would you feel if this is as close as you get to seeing your kids each day"?
Do these stairs look like yours at home? Lacking a banister, but with a ragged carpet, these are the stairs to the Warrington voluntary winter night shelter. Hidden in an anymous building, in the path of a new road & ear-marked for demolition, volunteers make up beds and prepare food for the homeless. The door at the bottom is locked with heavy bolts to protect people inside & out. | (7) ![]()
| Referrals are done at the Warrington YMCA and the details on each evenings occupants are collected here.
They detail a variety of problems, not least dyslexia and difficulties with plain English.
Ted, donates his time willingly. He is a reformed alcoholic and sees echoes of his own past in the shelter.
