A wet night and not a capacity Northwich crowd, but what a show you missed if you stayed at home! First up cracking Liverpool band Business Owls, then local heroes now based in Manchester the Short Cuts. Last off, the stars of the night, Chester based Wayriders. Filling the stage with a giant brass section, they deserved their encore!

Business Owls

Where have all the scouse bands gone? Its been so long since we've had anyone at the Rec venturing across the M62. For The Business Owls, it was well worth the journey after their recent stint across the pond! They even brought some candy! Grinding guitar,no strangers to using all of the stage and every band member chipping in on the vocals from the openers Never Say Die and Doesn't Matter. The anything but lo-fi middle section of the set; Undercover, All I Wanted, On Display and Letting Go cemented the Business Owls with the Northwich Crowd. The cover tracks like old ghosts. They'll all be out and the finalle Crawl Back Under left everyone begging for more. They all got in the shot as the Business Owls aped Iron Maiden. Brilliant drumming. 8 1/2 out of 10 and a tough act for local band now turned Manchester lads Short Cuts (fellow band from the MoreWeight Records stable www.moreweight.com) to follow.
Business Owls (originally Floyd Peppers Business Owls Explosion) are Sam Walkerdine on vocals/guitar/drums, Greg Macoy on vocals/bass/guitar and Simon Turner on vocals/drums/keyboards/melodian/guitar. Catch the Business Owls at the manchester Night and Day Cafe (1st May 2004).

Short Cuts

Hailing from the same scene as Tokyo Adventures and Grampus Eight (no the publicity says...) and never known to dissapoint and fresh from a mini tour with The wayriders, the Short Cuts were on top form tonight. Classic tracks from the back catalog like But I Don't Blame You and Letting Go definitely hit the spot with the crowd. Dont miss the 21st May Short Cuts gig with New Jack Swing, Yesterdays Heroes, Dave Speakman down at Barnton British Legion. Checkout www.noise-box.cjb.net for more info.
The Short-Cuts are Vegetarian Sam Stephens on vocals + bass, Chrisopher Mundoire on percussion and backing vocals, fast Eddie Griffiths on guitar and Matt Cooley on guitar + vocals.

The Wayriders

The stage just wasnt big enough for this giant band. Brilliant Ska brass section and music from both of The wayriders CD's. The wall of brass thundered in with Tease, 2Play and Hooligan. It was hard to spot the join between jazz, ska and punk. Amazing to see the guitarist holding his own, nearly pushed off the stage by all those cornets and trumpets. Also nearly pushed off the stage by the cheeky Short Cuts revealing some Bill Grundies, but managing just to keep it clean! The set only got better as it ploughed into Dragnet, No 12, Road and Sweet Hate. Encores may be for losers, but it was a cracker from The Wayriders.

The Wayriders are Andy on Lead Vocals + Guitar,Paul on Bass Guitar, Hugh on Alto and Tenor Sax/Vocals, Tom on Tenor Horn + Vocals, Sean on Drums, Ellie on Trumpet, Trombone + Vocals + Tomos on Alto Sax.
The Wayriders have been around since 2000 and established hands at grabbing vital publicity. Posing as those 'Poppy Fields' AKA The Alarm they charted at no 28 in the singles chart. They play in Cardiff with The Alarm on the 19th April 2004 (Clwb Ifor Bach). More gigs ahead include The Underworld, London, Live Bar, Manchester, The Boardwalk Sheffield, Stockport Student Union (with Out Of Gauge, Rhythmic Coughing, Me and 3 Others and Built From Scratch), The Castle, Union st, Oldham, with Hong Kong Flu, The Annexe, Spalding with Charlie's Banned and Wooden Horse and King Georges Hall - Windsor Suite, BLACKBURN.
